Ok,….2 post in one day, not my usual style but I promised to tell you how Adsense is working for me in one of my recent posts.
First of all, “What is Adsense”?…in case you do not know!
Simply, “Adsense” is Google’s program of placing “Adwords” ads, either text or banner, on host’s websites in a contextual manner so that the viewer can click on ads relevant to the host site and to their interests. (This is determined by the search query that the “Googler” types in to the search box.
The host is paid a fee every time a visitor clicks on one of the ads on his/her site and visits the site of the advertiser. The advertiser pays Google Adwords for this click and the host gets a respectable 68% fee for the click from Google. In order to do this you need an approved Adsense account from Google.
Now…consider that some of these clicks are worth big $’s, this can add up. High value ads may have CPC’s (cost per click of $2.00, $10, $20 and even some up to $100!).
If you are thinking of Adsense as a potential revenue source, there are a few things to think about.
First…what is the CPC (cost per click) value average for your niche and specifically, your targeted keywords (KW’s)? You can find the relative CPC values using the “Google External Keyword Tool”. Just type in this search and it will take you to this great free tool. You have to select for the CPC column but it will tell you how much clicks on each relevant KW are worth.
Secondly, how many monthly searches are in your niche or primary KW. You probably want to stick to niches getting at least 100 “Exact Match” searches per day. If the niche doesn’t have traffic then you don’t have a viable niche. I prefer niches with combined keyword traffic of at least 5000 or more per month.
Thirdly, how competitive is the niche and specifically, your primary KW? I like to use the free version of “Traffic Travis” for SEO competition scores. If it is “Medium Difficulty” to “Very Easy” you could have a winner. One of my best sites has medium difficulty for the primary keyword and we get up to 100 unique visitors per day.
Choosing Your Niche: In addition to the three main things above, it is essential to pick a niche for which folks are going to have a burning need or desire, for the information and content of your website. For example, if your dog is peeing on the floor you have a burning need to find a solution…don’tcha? It has to be something that people need a solution for right now.
Domain Selection: I always try to pick a domain which is based on the primary KW. This could be www.keyword.com, .org or .net or www.key-word….etc or www.key-word-info…. Etc.
Adding Content: Content can take many forms but basically, good quality articles, pictures and videos are going to provide the depth of value and relevance needed. I use a content article formula which is like this:
a. Lead Article – primary keyword. Usually 700 – 1200 words (Main Page)
b. Secondary Articles – second tier keywords; these are checked thoroughly on Traffic Travis and other tools to determine their value, traffic and competition. (See below for more valuable tools and resources). 500 – 700 words
c. Tertiary Articles – third level KWs and ‘lighter” articles of 200 – 300 words.
It is our belief that niche sites like what I am describing should be high quality, relevant and of good value to the viewers. But…the information should be incomplete, compelling the visitor to click on the affiliate links and Adsense Ads. Because…that’s’ how you make your money!
Internal Linking Structure: This is also important but remains the subject for another post. All KW based articles are published as “Pages”, not posts so they each have their own KW based title and URL.
Theme: Choosing a wp-theme that works is equally important. We are testing several and will report back once we have some conclusions.
This is a very incomplete introductory article on using Adsense as a monetization strategy but I will say without reservation that it rocks! It is also time consuming and it is WORK!
We have sites that are earning up to $20/day which does not sound like much but consider that the hard costs of creating such sites is $12 for a domain, hosting, which I already have for other sites anyway, but let’s say $20/mo, Articles, write them your self or outsource them, perhaps $150.00. So potentially we could have 10 sites earning $20/day = $73,000/year.
Not bad for $1500 cost and further more, these sites have value if you want to flip them, so called “Virtual Real Estate”! I also believe that it is only a matter of time and testing more niche sites that we will hit one or more that earn $100 or more per day.
Link Building: This is perhaps the biggest job but we use tools for link building below all of which I use and trust or I would not recommend them.
